Choosing a poster size

• 12" x 18" and 18" x 24" — window posters and in-store promotions read at conversational distance.
• 24" x 36" — the standard commercial poster. Movie posters, event announcements, retail campaigns.
• 24" x 48", 32" x 48" and 36" x 48" — wall-dominating formats for lobbies, gyms and venue interiors.
• 6" x 24", 6" x 32" and 6" x 36" — narrow strips for shelf edges, door frames and stair risers.
• 12" x 48" and 48" x 48" — specialist proportions for column wraps and square feature walls.

Where paper posters beat rigid signage

Posters are meant to be replaced. That is their strength: when a campaign changes every few weeks, printing on paper and taping or framing it costs a fraction of producing rigid boards, and there is nothing to store when the promotion ends. Cinemas, gyms, music venues, campus notice boards, retail windows and restaurant interiors all run on exactly this model.

Because the stock is paper, keep posters indoors or behind glass. If your poster needs to survive weather, print the same artwork on coroplast or vinyl instead.

Designing a poster that works at distance

A poster has to do two jobs at once: catch someone at twenty feet and reward them at two. Give the headline the top third and enough size to read across a room, put the essential detail — date, price, address — in the middle at a size readable from a few feet, and keep everything else small. Build at 150 DPI at final size in CMYK with 0.125" bleed, and keep content 0.5" inside the trim in case the poster goes into a frame.
