Choose your hemming

Hemming folds the vinyl edge back and welds it, which doubles the material at the edge and stops the banner tearing at its fixing points. It is the single biggest factor in how long a banner survives outdoors.

• None — lowest cost. Fine for indoor banners hung once for an event.
• Top and bottom — reinforces the two horizontal edges that take the load on a wall-hung banner.
• Right and left — for banners tensioned between two vertical posts.
• 2 shortest sides / 2 longest sides — the same idea expressed by proportion rather than orientation; useful on square-ish banners.
• All 4 sides — the recommended choice for any banner going outdoors for more than a few days. Every edge is reinforced, so wind cannot start a tear anywhere.

Choose your grommet spacing

• None — for banners going into a pole pocket or a tension frame.
• Top 2 corners — indoor banners hung from two hooks.
• All 4 corners — the minimum for anything outdoors; secures the bottom so wind cannot flap it.
• Every 2–3 feet on top and bottom — the standard for a wall or fence banner. More fixings means less stress at each one.
• Every 2–3 feet on sides — for banners laced vertically between posts.
• Every 2–3 feet all around — for large exposed banners on fencing, where the whole perimeter needs lashing down.

Glossy or matte — which finish?

Gloss gives you maximum color saturation and the deepest blacks, which is why it dominates outdoor and event banners where the job is to be seen from far away. The tradeoff is reflection: under direct sun at the wrong angle, or under bright indoor spotlights, a gloss banner throws a hot spot that can wash out part of the message. For indoor trade shows, photography backdrops and anywhere lighting is controlled and close, matte vinyl banners are the safer choice.

Hanging a banner so it survives the wind

Wind is what destroys banners, and it does it by turning a flat sheet into a sail. Tension the banner from every grommet rather than just the corners, use bungee cords or elastic ties instead of rigid rope so gusts are absorbed rather than transferred to the fabric, and on any banner over about 4 feet tall in an exposed position, ask for wind slits or accept that a solid banner will need retensioning. Set files up at 100 DPI at final size, CMYK, with 0.125" bleed and all critical content at least 2" inside the edge so grommets never punch through type.
