The printed side faces out and the black side faces in. From outside, your eye is drawn to the bright printed surface and the holes disappear, so the graphic reads as solid. From inside, you are looking from a darker space toward a bright one, and your eye goes through the holes rather than at the black film — so you see out.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThat is also why the effect weakens after dark, when the inside is brighter than the outside.
